Escape to Hugh's!
So anyway, as you may have realised, I’m trying to avoid the whole “we did this and then we did that” generic content for the blog, but I just wanted to give a shout out to our man Hugh Newton, doing his thing in Ghana’s Volta region, who saved us from the madness of Accra this weekend for what was a pretty sick couple of days by the coast. He’s 2nd from the right – quite tall, wearing the African looking shirt...THE WHITE DUDE. Jeez...
Aside from the guesthouse he’s built called Meet Me There, next to a palm-fringed lagoon which backs onto the beach...or the boat trip to the estuary of the Volta river that he organises, for a
barbeque on the deserted and unspoilt white sandy beaches...or the amazing night time drumming show at the guesthouse by his troop of drummers from Burkina Faso....the guy is doing some serious good in the area and deserves a little credit for his work.
Having started and successfully run the Chai Chapel, which you may have encountered at various music festivals around the UK, Hugh has taken to his guesthouse, where he’s not only helping to push tourism forward in one of Ghana’s poorest areas, but is also playing his part in helping to support the local community – from schools, to musicians, even to the local wildlife (he
pays hunters for any caught animals, so instead of being killed and sold, they get looked after by Hugh. There’s a couple of dwarf Nile crocodiles, a python, a monkey....I think a zoo is in the pipeline...). It’s really encouraging to see, and if any of you come to Ghana I’d strongly recommend paying him a visit.
Oh, and Ghana lost 1-0 .
