Our First Event in Ghana

So this weekend we had our first ever event as Beating Tracks, and even more significantly, our first event in GHANA!

And I’m happy to say, it went pretty well…employed for the project by the British Council (BC), Beating Tracks project managed their WAPi festival, an event held by BC throughout Africa. The event, themed this time around as “I Rep Africa”, provides young creatives with a chance to network, perform and learn more about their field of study and expertise, from music, art, spoken word, design, acting and more. Unfortunately the event had come under some hard times over recent editions, with attendee numbers lower than hoped, but we pulled together some of the contacts we’ve made since arriving here, along with a couple of new ideas, and managed to pull off quite a successful event.

With live performances from Ghanaian headliners R2Bees, alongside young artists in music and spoken word, the event included acting workshops, a fashion show, an expert discussion panel session, all promoted through radio, Facebook, flyers, posters, an online PR campaign and word of mouth. We also included a competition to further hype the event, for young artists to show how they “Rep Africa” in their chosen artform, with the winners in music, visual art and spoken word awarded a place on the BC Creative Entrepeneurs training scheme.

WE LEARNT A LOT ABOUT RUNNING EVENTS IN GHANA! Sometimes the hard way…but we got there in the end, and were very happy with how it went.

A big thanks to PY, Sesi, Nana Yaw and the Facebook Mafia, Nana Asihene, Toke, Top Dog Communications, Jahwi, Ameyaw Debrah, Linda Konadu, R2Bees, Ms Naa, Jason Nartey, Kwaku Boateng, The Coconut Grove Hotel, British Council, Touring Ghana, Ghana Facebookers, and of course all the performers and artists on the day. You are all wonderful people.

Other than that, I had milk the other day for the first time in 5 months and have had an upset stomach ever since. THAT’S HOW GHANAIAN I AM NOW. Street food, NO PROBLEM mate. Milk, not up for it in the slightest.
